The former Blue Jays of Southfield High School and the former Chargers of Southfield-Lathrup High have finally merged – the result of a decision made by the district’s Board of Education to address declining enrollment districtwide.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the merge was held Sept. 20 in front of the school, with Principal Sonia Jackson cutting the ribbon.
The district took programs and courses that made both high schools unique and made sure they were available at the merged school. For instance, senior Kayla-Lashawn Hereford said, “I am so excited to now have dance class.” And former Chargers now have access to Southfield High’s radio station.
Some other changes made along with the merger are teachers switching grade levels. Math teacher Valerie Walker, who previously taught juniors, now teaches sophomores. Walker said, ‘‘I love it; it’s going better than expected.”
“I am so proud of how well everything is going”, said Superintendent Lynda Wood.
The new school has three assistant principals: Vernon Burden, Tonya Hickman, and Scott Tocco.
